- Back in 2000 an iwi forum made up of hapuu representatives of Taranaki recommended to the council that hapuu and iwi needed their own elected representatives. There are eight iwi in the Taranaki region and five of these tribes are in the NPDC region. These iwi include Ngati Tama, Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Maru, Te Atiawa and my own tribe, Taranaki iwi.
