- These findings are based on studies of mitochondrial DNA, a relatively new science that shows how human populations are related to each other.
Despite the large variety of languages, cultures and physical types in aboriginal Australia, researchers have concluded they are descended from a single group. Evidence shows that some of these groups settled down along the route of wandering and have lived in the same areas for 40,000 years.
