West Aussies the country's biggest boozers
- One in five of those polled in WA said they had increased their consumption in the past 12 months — the most of any State — and many attributed this to the need to drink to feel happy or less stressed. But almost 70 per cent said they were comfortable with how much they drank.
WA drinkers also reported the most experience of alcohol-related violence — 42 per cent compared with the national average of 35 per cent.
However they had the highest awareness of safe drinking guidelines, including advice to pregnant women not to drink.
