The next steps to reconciliation

The next steps to reconciliation - Mayor Adrian Weston said the week — which runs from May 27 to June 3 — saluted the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians, and was an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s identity and history. ‘‘The week provides an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the reconciliation process,’’ he said. ‘‘This year’s theme ’Let’s take the next steps’ commemorates two historic milestones — 50 years since the 1967 referendum to amend the Constitution to recognise indigenous people and 25 years since the Mabo decision. And we are asking the community to take the next steps by joining us in a walk, to symbolise the next big steps in our nation’s reconciliation journey.

Burned by Brexit, young Brits are registering to vote in droves

Burned by Brexit , young Brits are registering to vote in droves - The world’s most politically apathetic youth are finally mobilizing. Voter turnout among young people is notoriously low in the UK—it has fallen from 66% in 1992 to around 40% in the last general election in 2015. But since mid-April, when prime minister Theresa May announced a snap election for June 8, voters aged 18-25 have registered to vote at historically high rates. Over a million young people have registered to vote over the past month or so—the most of any age group. Over the past five weeks, more under-25s have registered to vote than at the same period in the run-up to the Brexit referendum last year and the general election in 2015.

A pyrrhic victory for euroscepticism?

A pyrrhic victory for euroscepticism? - Dr Usherwood began the discussion by arguing that Euroscepticism does not truly exist: instead, the political podium has observed a variety of Euroscepticisms, each of which represent a wide range of views, opinions, and political actors, all driven by a degree of dislike of some aspect of European integration. The Leave campaign itself highlighted this division in ideologues as numerous groups of activists with different approaches were brought together by an apparent common goal, to exit the European Union, despite of any tensions between these groups.

Australia's 'Stolen Generations' facing prolonged trauma

Australia's 'Stolen Generations' facing prolonged trauma -  The term "Stolen Generations" refers to the thousands of indigenous children who were taken from their homes and put in foster care with white families or institutions under assimilation policies that ended only in the early 1970s. Many never saw their parents or siblings again. The pivotal "Bringing Them Home" report in 1997, which followed a national inquiry into the tragedy, acknowledged the human rights violations suffered and set out measures to support those affected. One of the key demands mentioned in the report was a national apology, which finally came in 2008. But two decades on, victims said that while funding had been provided for counselling, cultural programmes and family support, they continued to face institutional racism and cited a failure to properly address mental health issues.
